My apologies - this page is not yet complete....
Crete, indeed Greece as a whole, has many Municipal parks and gardens providing an almost tropical forest scenario complete with English type duck-ponds, meandering pathways between many different varieties of tree, flower and shrub.  Sometimes exotic birds and animals, perhaps a museum and almost invariably a well stocked cafe or periptero.  There are three large gardens here on Crete one in Iraklion; one in Rethymnon; and one right here in Chania, as well as a myriad of other green oasis' where you least expect to find them. Municipal Park, garden, Tzanakaki St, Chania, Crete.
Chania...
All these spots have one thing in common, they provide cool shaded areas away from the often overheated rough and tumble of the bustling streets so close by.  We often take a break from shopping in Chania by sitting in the municipal park halfway up Tzanakaki - across the road from the central market and walk up on the same side as the National Bank - keeping the bank on your left.  There are a few animals - Kri Kri in a compound and there used to be a couple of Chimps (now gone) but the main attraction is the taverna/cafe where many local people sit and chat in the shade.  There are a few park-like attractions for young children - a duck-pond and a small amusement area with electric rides to keep them happy while mum takes a break!  For cinema buffs there is an open-air theatre open in the evenings.  Not many tourists seem to find their way into the park but if you are here and feel like a break try this.
